We are pleased to announce our speaker:

Alberto Di Consiglio PhD, Patent Manager at Transfer Technology Office at EPFL (Lausanne)

After graduating in pharmaceutical biotechnologies in 2007 at University « La Sapienza » in Rome, he did a PhD in bone pathophysiology.  In 2011, he moved to Merck Serono in Geneva where he had the opportunity to work as a patent and scientific information specialist, where he handled part of the company’s patent portfolio related to biotech inventions.

In 2014, he joined the EPFL Technology Transfer Office as an IP specialist, focusing mainly on the fields of life science, chemistry and medical devices. He is currently a qualified European patent attorney and patent manager at the TTO, where he supports technology transfer managers with intellectual property-related matters.

Alberto will provide an overview over these topics in his 1-hour talk:

  • What is a patent and what is an invention – general overview and legal frame
  • Patentability criteria – novelty, inventive step
  • Patentability vs freedom to operate: can I use my invention?
  • Procedural aspects: patent filing and prosecution in different jurisdictions (patent strategy)
  • Patents in life science: chemistry, biologics, medical devices, biomaterials
  • Patentability exceptions in life science
  • Discoveries vs inventions: how to pick the best from your lab work

The event will take place on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019 from 18:00 to 19:30 in auditorium SV 1717 at EPFL.

This talk will be followed by an apéro to give you a chance to approach the speaker with specific questions, should you have any.
